More About Big Belly

Big Belly was once an Orlando brewery, having a history that is rich in downtown Orlando and dates all the way back to pre-prohibition times. Be sure to join all of Orlando for the traditional NICKEL BEER each and every Wednesday from 5:00pm to 7:30pm. It's cheap, you get to come see what everyone's talking about, and most importantly, you get to be a part of history in the making ;)

In 1922, prohibition was in full swing and so was Big Belly. The upstairs portion of Nicholson's Big and Tall became an illegal speak-easy and was commonly referred to by local regulars as "Bernies Buffet Club", the name referring to Nicholson's brother-in-law and former owner of the building, Bernard Dreyfus. Bernie was known for his love of drinks; thus "Bernies Buffet Club" served up a wide assortment of beer, wine and spirits. The Big Belly Brewery took its name from the result of Bernard Dreyfus' years of bellying up to the bar. The first of many businesses opened in this building in 1911. Bernard Dreyfus ran Orlando Beef and Poultry for nearly ten years before leaving downtown Orlando for the lucrative orange grove business in the Kissimmee area.

L.E. Nicholson took over the old slaughter house and turned it into a big and tall men's clothing store. To most of the world (including the local authorities), it seemed Nicholson ran a simple clothing store, but to the locals in the know, it was much more. Membership in the club was exclusive.

Only Orlando's rowdiest working class citizens were admitted. Central Florida socialites found it undignified to climb through the second story windows for entrance! "Bernie's Buffet Club" was very much a place for everyday people to gather and have a good time. We try hard to preserve that same feeling today with Big Belly. The end of prohibition put an end to "Bernie's Buffet Club."

There was no need for such a place because Tom, Dick and Bernie opened their own saloons in the downtown area: none of them, however, would ever measure up to the original. We hope to continue the tradition of being the originators by which all other will be measured. Since "Bernies Buffet" and Nicholson's Big and Tall, there have been several businesses that have occupied the building. None of them had ever seen the fun and excitement of Bernies Buffet"... until now!

We hope you have as much fun visinting Big Belly today than you would have if you were visiting the Big Belly Brewery as they did at Bernies 75 years ago.
